Largest propane storage tank in Europe

Exciting times ahead for Oiltanking and its partners: After an intensive construction period Oiltanking is starting up operations of one of the biggest LPG storage tanks in Europe. Oiltanking Antwerp Gas Terminal (OAGT) has designed, engineered and constructed the #propane tank to supply a new world-scale propane dehydrogenation (PDH) production facility for its customer Borealis in Belgium.

The new and fully refrigerated tank has a capacity of 135.000 cbm. At the moment our team at Oiltanking Antwerp together with its partner is preparing the tank for safereliable and efficient storage of propane at a level of approximately -40C. The tank is the second of this magnitude Oiltanking has completed at its Antwerp terminal within two years, following successful commission of its #butane tank in 2021.

”This new propane storage tank and associated jetty and pipeline infrastructure is key enabler for the strategic sourcing and supply of propane feedstock for the existing and new Borealis PDH assets in Kallo. We extend our partnership with Oiltanking and look forward to a successful start-up and safe, reliable and #efficient operations of the new terminal infrastructure “says Thomas Van De Velde, Borealis SVP BU Hydrocarbons & Energy.

“Building on our high quality engineering experience and strength in developing industrial terminals, Oiltanking Antwerp is setting up a world-class propane and butane hub supporting growth to the petrochemical industry in the area. By applying a unique and smart design, including a LPG product heater concept and a cross current exchanger for export pipeline operations, the new hub will achieve significant energy savings compared to industry standards,” said Douglas Van Der Wiel, SVP Europe, Middle East, Africa at Oiltanking. “A project of this magnitude can only be achieved with true teamwork. We thank Borealis for their trust and partnership, our contractors for their dedication and delivery and to all our fantastic colleagues for making this project a big success.”
